Taking Up Space
Taking up space is a project using Craftevism, a form of activism using crafts, to raise awareness of weight stigma and the impact of shame on those who live in bigger bodies. And to promote body positivity amoungst those who are impacted by societal expectations of the body.
The first part of this project was a pop up art installation, ‘You’re bloomin’ marvellous’ an oversized textiles garden inviting EveryBody no matter the size to enter and be affirmed by the messages contained amoung the plants. The installation was made with clothes that no longer fit, transformed into something new, in the same way that the project seeks to change how we think about ourselves and others.
Inspired by gardens, in which the flowers and foliage unapologetically grow and take up space, the work was taken to several locations in Bristol, aimed to inspire views to do the same.
